Biography / Administrative History
Beverly Ann Fitch McCarthy was born August 10, 1933 to Clyde and Else
Fitch in St. Louis Missouri. Fitch McCarthy received a B.A. degree from the
University of Berkeley in 1956 where she was part of multiple organizations
including Phi Mu, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Student Judicial
Committee, Executive Board, and Mortar Board. She received her M.A. degree from
Stanford University in 1957. From 1962-1985 she was a counselor/instructor at
San Joaquin Delta College. In 1973 she married John Linley McCarthy in
Stockton, California. During her time in Stockton Fitch McCarthy held various
leadership roles including but not limited to President of the Stockton Unified
School District Board of Trustees, President of the Stockton Opera Guild,
Founder and President of the Stanford Women’ Club of San Joaquin Valley,
President of the Philomathean Club, and President of the Stockton Symphony
Association. Fitch McCarthy has also held elected office on the Stockton City
Council, and received multiple honors such as Stocktonian of 2019 and Woman of
the Year for Stockton in 1970 and 1974.

Fitch McCarthy, "…founded the
San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women in 1974, and served as
chair for 14 years. In 1975, she founded the Susan B. Anthony Award for San
Joaquin County Women of Achievement. In addition, McCarthy served as president
of her California chapter of NOW for a year, and was a CA delegate to the
National Women’s Conference in Houston (1977). She was a member of the board of
the National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) from 1977 – 1978, and
was state president of California Women in Higher Education from 1977 – 1979.
While a member of the Stockton (CA) city council, she introduced a resolution
on decriminalizing prostitution (which failed 1-6). She was active in Planned
Parenthood and served as an escort at abortion clinics."
