    The gift of George “Wally” Stearns

    Biography/Administrative History

    George Wally Stearns (1934-2009), the son of Roswel and Rose Stearns, grew up at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Los Angeles, and was ordained there on January 22, 1956. He was a graduate of Occidental College and San Francisco Theological Seminary. After his ordination he served as Director of Migrant Ministry in Kings County in the San Joaquin Valley of California, under the National Council of Churches, and then in Bell Gardens Community Center in Southern California. He pastored churches in Ukiah, La Canada and Pasadena. He also served as a teacher and Chaplain at Schutz School in Alexandria, Egypt while he pastored the Community Church there. In the mid seventies he became an activist for Middle East peace and reconciliation.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection contains two church bulletins from Immanuel Presbyterian Church which provide biographical information on Wally Stearns. The bulk of papers are resources, articles, information, newsletters, email updates, meeting announcements, minutes of meetings and other papers related to the Middle East, gathered by Wally Stearns from 1976 to 2005. Meetings held by two Fuller professors, Butrus Abd-al-Malik and Fred Bush, are included. Also included are letters to President Bush and other political leaders, as well as a petition against the war in Iraq.
