    Biography / Administrative History

    The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Capitol Lodge No. 87 (Sacramento, Calif.) was established on June 10, 1859 by Samuel Cross as a local chapter of the non-political and non-sectarian fraternal organization Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Capitol Lodge no. 87 was the second chapter of Odd Fellows founded in Sacramento, the first established by Albert Winn in 1849. The charter officers included E.F. White, C.M. Mason, John McClintock, Amos Woods, E.M. Heuston, G.A. Basler, C.B. Steane, Lewis Shuck, Thomas B. Byrne, James Bowstead, M.M.Estee, and F.K. Krauth. The lodge held meetings every Friday evening and was originally located at the intersection of K Street and 3rd St in downtown Sacramento, California.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Capitol Lodge No. 87 (Sacramento, Calif.) records document the establishment and day-to-day activities of the Capitol Lodge no. 87 in Sacramento, California. The records are organized into six series: Series 1. Correspondence, Series 2. Petitions, Series 3. Membership and rosters, Series 4. Financial records, Series 5. Reports, Series 6. Assorted. The correspondence series includes assorted correspondence written to the Capitol Lodge No. 87 Sacramento California from various Odd Fellow lodges throughout California regarding various members and lodge activities. Petitions consist of applications to join the Capitol Lodge No. 87 by potential members and petitions to financially aid other lodges and members throughout the State of California. Membership and rosters series includes membership applications, rejection letters, and receipt of membership dues. It also includes one membership application to the Wampanoag Lodge no. 311, 1856 and a membership roster of the masonic luncheon club of Sacramento, California, 1944. The financial records include membership dues receipts and treasurer bonds of the Capitol Lodge no. 87 Sacramento, California. Also included is a 1948 booklet of Dewey-Warren Dollar Certificates in support of the Thomas Dewey-Earl Warren dollar certificate fund. Reports in the collection consist of semi-annual reports of the Capitol Lodge no. 87 and two reports of the R.W. Grand Lodge of the State of California listing reinstated, suspended, resigned, and rejected members from lodges across the State of California. The assorted series includes items that were part of the original purchase of the collection from Wendell Hammon's Archives and Artifact but are not directly related to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Capitol Lodge No. 87 (Sacramento, Calif.) and include Independent Order of Odd Fellows programs from other lodges in California, a booklet, "Why let if burn," and two copies of Home News, the newsletter of the Children of the Rebekah Orphans Home, Gilroy, California.
