Background

Scope and content:

The Bamford James Fitzpatrick photographs contain sixteen photographs documenting Fitzpatrick's time in Sacramento and Northern California. These photographs depict portraits and general railroad scenes in the Sacramento Capitol, Roseville, Blue Canon, and Cisco, California. Photos in the Capitol include multiple shots of Fitzpatrick posing in front of the Capitol building and pictures of the Sacramento River. While in Roseville, Fitzpatrick took photos of the street where his hotel was located, the Pacific Fruit Express' icing plant, Southern Pacific's train yard, and a park he visited. In Blue Canon, Fitzpatrick took a photo of tracks and a photo of an oil-burning steam engine. Fitzpatrick took photographs of various railroad scenes while in Cisco, including tracks, photos of various locations he frequented such as what he identifies as a shack where he did his "haching," and a snowshed.

Biographical / historical:

Bamford James Fitzpatrick was born in Belmont, Ontario on April 6, 1908 to George Fitzpatrick and Carrie Fitzpatrick [nee Crowe]. Fitzpatrick was the second of four brothers, and initially began his career with farming. He eventually transitioned to working in construction as a painter and maintenance man, helping place telegraph lines along the railroad from Canada and into the United States.

He traveled across both countries, taking photographs and recording each of his destinations from Ontario to California. On December 22, 1940, Fitzpatrick married Margaret Snider in Halifax, Ontario. They had no children. Fitzpatrick served briefly in World War II, and was stationed at Barriefield Military Camp. He remained in Ontario, Canada as a painter and maintenance man until his death in Halifax in 1985.
