    Scope and Contents

This collection was created 2001-2007 by an interdisciplinary team led by Professor Edward R.B. McCabe of the Department of Pediatrics in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Professor Nathaniel C. Comfort of the Institute of the History of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Marcia L. Meldrum of the UCLA Department of History. Thirty-five interviews were conducted with pioneers and leaders in the field of human genetics as it developed between 1948 and 1990. Each oral author discusses his or her background and training, developing interest in human genetics, choice of research problems and/or methods, contributions to the field, opinions on ethical and social issues, and participation in professional organizations. The project was supported by research grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute and the National Science Foundation and by seed grants from the March of Dimes and the American Society of Human Genetics.
