Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains composer-inscribed published and manuscript scores financially supported by Ralph I. Dorfman and Peggy Dorfman for the San Francisco Symphony, Kronos Quartet, and other music organizations between 1972 and 2013. There is also a small number of graphic materials presented as gifts to Peggy Dorfman for her patronage of new music.

Biographical / historical:

Ralph and Peggy Dorfman were active patrons of avant-garde new music for orchestra and chamber ensembles for over 6 decades. Their earliest commission in 1968 funded Sir William Walton to compose 'Improvisations on an Impromptu of Benjamin Britten' which later premiered with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Josef Krips in 1970. The Ralph I. Dorfman Family Fund which Ralph and Peggy established would go on to fund over 20 new works for premières with San Francisco Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, and other organizations.

Acquisition information:
Ralph I. and Peggy Dorfman Family Collection of Music Scores was donated to the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound by Elizabeth Dorfman in 2024.
