Contains a photograph of MARTHA BUEHNER (built 1911; steam schooner) hauled out for drydocking and LAKE FILBERT (built 1919; freighter) in the water at the edge of a marine railway at the General Engineering & Dry Dock Company shipyard in Alameda, California, 1919-1923. There is 1 unique photographic image in 2 physical forms (1 black-and-white photographic print, 8 x 9.5 in., mounted on 8.5 x 9.5 in. board and 1 black-and-white copy negative, 5 x 7 in.). View off the port bow of MARTHA BUEHNER on the left and bow view of LAKE FILBERT on the right. Other steamships and a three-masted schooner are among the vessels docked in the background. Photographer's number G-133 is written in the lower right corner.

Biographical / historical:

LAKE FILBERT, built in 1919 for the U.S. Shipping Board, was sold to the Alaska Steamship Company in 1922 or 1923 and renamed NABESNA. A.M. SIMPSON, built in 1911 for the Simpson Lumber Company, was sold to the Buehner Lumber Company in 1916 and renamed MARTHA BUEHNER.

In January 1983 the photographic print was loaned for copying by Sara Conklin-Halaj, the Park's former registrar. A copy negative was made and cataloged as P83-008 (accession SAFR-0001, GOGA-00789). Years later the photographic print was found in the collections storage area. A post-it note adhered to the verso of the print read "Garage sale item. Made a print for myself. Original for park." The print was accessioned as a field collection (SAFR-02419) in November 2015 and accrued to P83-008 in December 2015.

SAFR-00001 is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service in 1977.

GOGA-00789 was transferred from the J. Porter Shaw Library to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in February 1985.
