The School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles was established in 1947 as the Department of Public Health. However, instruction in Public Health formally began two years prior with the establishment of a University of California system-wide public health program. The Department began offering graduate study in 1955. On March 17, 1961 the Department officially became the School of Public Health.
In the 1980s the School underwent a reorganization into five departments: Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Services. The School currently sponsors several centers: The Center for Adolescent Health Promotion, the Center to Elminate Health Disparities, Centers for Environmental Quality and Health, the Center for Health Policy Research, the Center for Envrionmental Genomics, the Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities, the Center for Human Nutrition, the Center for Public Health and Disasters, the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Center Research, and the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center.
The purpose of the Faculty Council of the School of Public Health is to promote the administration of the School of Public Health. Its duties are to keep the Department Chairs and Associate Dean informed of matters at the School and University level, and to assist in the administration of the School. Membership is composed of Department Chairs and the Dean. The three Associate Deans and the Chair of the Faculty serve as ex officio members without a vote.
