Abstract: City directories are among the most important sources of information about urban areas and their inhabitants. They provide
personal and professional information about a city's residents as well as information about its business, civic, social, religious,
charitable, and literary institutions. A typical city directory provides a listing of residents, streets, businesses, organizations
or institutions, giving their location in a city.
The collection consists of 78 bound volumes of Los Angeles city directories covering the years 1886 through 1953, though not
every year is represented.
Language of Material:
English.
USC's set of Los Angeles city directories cover the years between 1886 and 1953, except for the following years: 1889, 1897,
1898, 1900, 1919, 1943-48, 1950-52. Most of the volumes are fragile and enclosed in phase boxes for protection. The first
20 boxes include one year of each year that is included in the collection; the last 7 boxes are duplicate volumes.
