Purchased from Edwin Grabhorn, January 1945.
Leonard G. Redfield, California emigrant and miner; in 1853 he journeyed overland from
Jefferson County, New York. He lived in San Jose, California, where his relatives, including
cousins Aldin E. Moody, Charles Moody, and Volney D. Moody, had settled. Redfield also
engaged in mining at Moore's Flat, Nevada County, California.
A collection of 99 items from 1853 to 1858, it consists primarily of family letters which
discuss mining in Nevada County, California, and life in San Jose and San Francisco from
1855 to 1856. Other topics in the collection include family affairs; the development of
Poweshiek County, Iowa; and news from Jefferson County, New York. Frequent correspondents in
the collection include Euphrasia Redfield Carpenter, Charlotte A. Putney, and E.S.
Redfield.
