    Historical note

The Society of California Pioneers was founded in 1850 in San Francisco by individuals who had arrived in California before 1850. Dedicated to the study and enjoyment of California art, history, and culture, the Society opened the first library in California, and a hall for meetings, lectures and social events (Pioneer Hall). It is the oldest organization west of the Mississippi. (Source: http://www.californiapioneers.org/)
