Description
A collection of the personal letters of James T. Jones, written from 1843 to 1867, while on voyages to South America, and while living in California.
Background
James T. Jones (approximately 1819-1869), lived in New York before sailing for South America on the U.S. Frigate "Raritan" from 1844 to 1846, he also sailed on other ships around South America until after 1850. In 1854 or 1855 he settled in San Francisco (returning again to New York from 1857 to 1869) to engage in various business enterprises. In September 1869, hoping to regain his health, Jones went to the Owens Valley but died within a few months at Independence, California on December 5, 1869.
