Arranged in five series, the first and most extensive features the musical compositions of Jorge Liderman, both complete and unfinished works, some with sketch materials; a second series is devoted to his student work, presented in two subseries of undergraduate and graduate periods. Series three is a chronologically arranged collection of concert programs and reviews of his compositions/performances. Professional papers appear in series four, arranged in four subseries comprising correspondence, grant applications, UC Berkeley teaching materials, and documentation of degrees and awards. Various media recordings containing audio, video, and data files as well as pictorial material complete the collection.

    Biographical / Historical

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 16 Nov 1957 and educated at the Rubin Academy of Music (1979-1983) in Jerusalem with Mark Kopitman and at the University of Chicago (1983-1988) with Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran, Jorge Liderman was a composer whose music embodied his life experience and resisted tidy stylistic classification. A classically trained guitarist, Liderman integrated diverse musical characteristics, often indebted to the music of locations where he lived or visited, blending these disparate components into a cohesive idiomatic musical language. He experimented with repetition and gradual processes in many of his works and repeated rhythmic motives and pitch materials on different structural levels, allowing musical ideas to be repeated immediately while also using repetition to contribute to the overarching formal structure. Liderman joined the Music Department at the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 and taught composition and music theory until his death on 3 Feb 2008 in El Cerrito, CA.

    Custodial History

The collection came to UC Berkeley from the estate of Jorge Liderman in two shipments through the help of John Kendall Bailey, who identified, sorted, and classified much of the material and provided a preliminary inventory.

    Scope and Contents

The collection documents the musical formation and career of Jorge Liderman, reflected primarily in compositions in the form of autograph sketches, manuscript drafts and fair copies, as well as computer-generated printouts of finished scores, some accompanied by performing parts with annotations and revisions from performances or recordings. It also contains textual material in the form of concert programs and reviews of his compositions as well as professional papers, such as correspondence, grant applications, and teaching materials from his period at UC Berkeley. The collection includes audio and video recordings as well as computer data discs.
