History
Melvin R. Ramey was a professor of civil engineering with a focus on biomechanics. He was the second Black professor hired
at the University of California, Davis and served as a track and field coach. His work as a coach contributed to his research
in biomechanics. Other accomplishments included working extensively with USA Track and Field and the United States Olympic
Committee.
Content Description
Papers of Dr. Melvin R. Ramey (1938-2017), former Associate Dean, Department Chair, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Faculty Athletic rep., and Volunteer Assistant Track & Field Coach at UC Davis. Documents relating to early academic training
at Penn State Univ. (2 sport athlete in Basketball and Track and Field) and MS, PhD material from Carnegie Mellon University.
Academic publications in the fields of Biomechanics and Engineering, especially a collection of notes, articles, and calculations
on the biomechanics of the long and triple jump. Small collection of academic awards, plaques, and sports trophies.
