    Biographical / Historical

    Dr. Richard F. Brady was a doctor and missionary who was in Nanjing during the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of a small group of Western missionaries who were in Nanjing when it as invaded by the Japanese, and he stayed behind to provide medical treatment at the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in the safety zone. Dr. Brady was awarded the Order of Jade medal by the Republican Chinese government for his service during that time.

    Content Description

    Materials in the collection include the Order of Jade medal that Brady was given by the Republican Chinese government for his service during the Japanese occupation as well a a number of journals and ledgers, missionary pamphlets, photographs, handwritten correspondence and notes (some transcribed by family members), documents and ephemera, both from Nanjing and from his missionary organization. The journals relate to Dr. Brady's experiences during the Japanese occupation (also known as "The Rape of Nanjing." Also included are materials collected by descendants of Dr. Brady such as newspaper clippings and contemporary printouts of website articles, including Wikipedia.
