    Scope and Contents

    The P. Louis and Marylynn T. Johnson Family Collection (1946-2023; undated) contains one box and 0.21 ft. of material belonging to the Johnson & Mahoney family. The majority of the collection contains political campaign documents regarding the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations, autographed photographs of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, and several photographs of P. Louis Johnson and politicians, a photograph of Marylynn T. Johnson's family, several newspaper clippings regarding P. Louis Johnson and his role in the California Federal Savings and Loan Association. The collection also contains correspondence with Governor Edmund G. Brown, Los Angeles Chairman Eric C. Adams, and William H. Gary, III, General Chairman of the Eighth Annual Dinner of the Joint Center for Political Studies. Lastly, the collection contains Christmas cards from the Ford and Reagan administrations, a letter from the 1972 Republican National Convention Committee on arrangements chairman, Bob Dole, general information about the convention, including a general fact sheet about the 1972 Republican National Convention, a list of the 1972 Republican National Convention State Housing Chairmen, a pamphlet titled "Rules adopted by the Republican National Convention", and a Civil Rights Report from the Nixon Administration.

    Biographical / Historical

    Pompie Louis Johnson Jr. was born on December 19, 1926, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Pompie Louis Johnson Sr. and Nellie Beatrice Pittman Johnson. Johnson received his bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Idaho State University and his Juris Doctor degree from Boston University Law School. Johnson began to assist the Republican Party in 1952 and worked as a staff assistant to the Citizens of Eisenhower. Following his move to California, Johnson would assist in major elections, supporting Republican candidates such as Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan. P. Louis Johnson held the positions of Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of the Security Pacific National Bank. He would later move on to the California Federal Savings and Loan Association, where Johnson would become the first Black Vice President of the California Federal Savings and Loan Association. P. Louis Johnson retired in 1992.
    Marylynn Temple Hughes Johnson was born in 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. Hughes Johnson received her Bachelor of Arts degree and education teaching credentials at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She continued her education at Pepperdine University, where she received an administrative credential. Hughes Johnson taught elementary education within the Los Angeles Unified District and retired in 2007. After retirement, she campaigned for Barack Obama in both 2008 and 2012 elections.
