Description
Papers and photographs belonging to Russel N. Squire (1908-1997), professor of Music at George Pepperdine College 1937-1956 and professor of Philosophy 1972-1978.
Background
Russel Squire was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 21, 1908. His parents were William John Squire and Jean Crookstone Muirhead. Russel Squire graduated from Oberlin College with a BSM in 1929 and from Western Reserve University with an M.A. in Music in 1939. He was Director of Instrumental Music Instruction for the Chillicothe (Ohio) Public Schools from 1929 to 1937. He married Doris Winifred Orr on August 5, 1931, and they had two sons – Ronald Nelson (born July 5, 1932) and William Cassius (born August 9, 1934).
