    Biography/Administrative History

Passive solar design is a design approach that utilizes the sun’s energy for the heating and cooling of living spaces. The building or elements of the building use natural energy characteristics created by direct exposure to the sun. Passive design has been practiced throughout the world and has produced buildings that result in reduced energy costs, reduced maintenance, and improved comfort. Windows, thermal chimneys, and thermal mass (elements that can store heat energy) are elements commonly found in passive design. Water walls are an example of thermal mass element of passive solar design. David A. Bainbridge has been involved in design and building for over 30 years. His interest in planning, microclimate, and renewable energy led to work with Living Systems and the California Energy Commission, and the creation of the Passive Solar Institute. He learned passive solar design working with Todd Neubauer and Jon Hammond, and in collaboration with Ken Haggard, Polly Cooper, Peter van Dresser, and William Schurcliff. He was awarded the American Solar Energy Society’s Passive Solar Pioneer Award in 2004. He retired as Associate Professor of Sustainable Management at Alliance International University in 2010. He is the author of 16 books, 21 book chapters, and more than 300 papers and reports including “A Water Wall Solar Design Manual”, published in 2005, contained in this collection.
