Biographical / Historical
Kenneth MacKenna (1899-1962) born Leo Mielziner Jr., was an American actor and film director. He debuted on Broadway in a
1920 production of
Opportunity . In New York he also produced and directed plays for the Theater Guild. MacKenna moved to Hollywood in 1929 during the advent
of sound films, he worked for Fox Film Corporation. He acted, directed, and eventually worked as a story editor for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
MacKenna's brother was prominent Broadway golden age theatrical designer Jo Mielziner (1901-1976).
John Barrymore (1882-1942) born John Sidney Blyth, was an American stage, screen, and radio actor who was a part of the Drew
and Barrymore theatrical families.
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of John Barrymore's original theatrical production illustrations for
The Jest (1919),
Richard III (1920), and an illustration of a street scene. Materials were given on the behalf of actor Kenneth MacKenna.
Originally part of the Ethel Barrymore Memorial Theatre Arts Collection at the University of Southern California Library
100 Series, and was labeled 100-8.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
John Barrymore gave these sketches to George Schaff in 1920, and he in turn, gave them to Kenneth MacKenna's brother Jo Mielziner
in 1956. Materials given to USC in the 1980s.
