Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains approximately 80 recordings of American opera singer Eula Beal on 7-, 10-, and 12-inch discs.

Biographical / historical:

Eula Beal (January 25, 1919–July 29, 2008) was an American opera lyric contralto. Born in Riverside, California, Beal grew up singing at the Redlands Bowl and in various local competitions.

Throughout the 1940s, she toured the United States as a concert contralto. She appeared with several orchestras, including the Phoenix Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, sang at venues such as Radio City Music Hall and the Tanglewood Music Festival, and starred in the 1947 film Concert Magic, the first full length movie of a classical music concert.

Beal married William Garnett, an American aerial landscape photographer, in 1941. In 1958, the couple settled in Napa, California with their three children. Beal continued to preform with the San Francisco Symphony, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Napa Symphony, and the Napa "Silverado Singers" choral group.
