photographs of Hawaii by photographer Joaquin A. Gonsalves.
Background
Joaquin A. Gonsalves (1855-1931) arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1879 and went to work in
the photography studios of J. Williams, and later A. A. Montano. Gonsalves is listed in the
Volcano House (Big Island, Hawaii) register in 1891 and 1893, when it was noted he was there
to take photographs. By 1893 he was in a partnership with photographer John Silva, who was
born in Portugal.
