Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collections contains the administrative materials of the Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, including meeting minutes, project proposals, conference materials, and correspondence.
- Biographical / historical:
-
In October 1981, a discussion group of Xerox/PARC and Stanford computer science professionals was formed on a computer message system at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. In 1982, the group created the Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) to raise awareness of the potential dangers of information and communications technology on integral governmental computer systems, especially in the computerization of war and nuclear proliferation. CPSR grew to international prominence during the 1990s, with at least 30 different nations having local branches. Their impact resulted in numerous projects and conferences, as their focus expanded to include a variety of computer-related areas such as workplace issues, privacy, participatory design, freedom of information, community networks, and many others. After 32 years, CPSR was dissolved in 2013.
