Background

Scope and content:

The research collection is divided into five series: Series I. Correspondence; Series II. Legal; Series III. Writing and Publishing; Series IV. Research Notes; Series V. Marketing; Series VI. Maps; and Series VII. Street Research. Very little original order existed for the collection.

Biographical / historical:

Carlos Alcalá is a lifelong Californian, born in Santa Monica in 1957 and raised in Lemon Grove, in San Diego County. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics at Stanford University, where he also took classes in Russian and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa upon graduation. His career has been in writing – first at small community papers and later for dailies, including the Sacramento Bee, where he worked 20 years as a reporter and columnist, and where he developed the idea for his book Sacramento Street Whys: The Whys Guy's Wise Guide to Sacramento Street Names. He finished his career with 10 years in the California State Assembly, where he worked in three jobs: communications director, legislative analyst and speechwriter. In retirement, he continues to write, focusing on an effort to document the history of his German-Jewish family's experiences in the generations before, during and after the Nazi era.
