Scope and content:

A collection of approximately 1,700 items from 1895 to 1944; it consists of personal, business, and literary papers, notebooks, a scrapbook, and ephemera. Correspondents represented in the collection include: Gertrude Franklin Atherton, Mary Hunter Austin, Francis F. Browne, Luther Burbank, John Burroughs, Gelett Burgess, Bliss Carman, John Vance Cheney, Ina Donna Coolbrith, Mary Mapes Dodge, Mary Hallock Foote, Richard Watson Gilder, Herbert Hoover, Julia Ward Howe, James H. Hyslop, George Wharton James, David Starr Jordan, Joseph LeConte, Jack London, Charles Fletcher Lummis, Edwin Markham, Bailey Millard, John Muir, Yoné Noguchi, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Theodore Roosevelt, Horace Elisha Scudder, Lucy Poate Stebbins, George Sterling, Charles Warren Stoddard, Sun Yat-Sen, Bayard Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Augustus Keeler (1871-1937) was an American poet, ornithologist, and advocate for the arts and architecture. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved with his family to Berkeley, California in 1887. Keeler was the author of Bird notes afield (1899) and many volumes of verse.

The material was acquired from various sources and in multiple acquisitions: Gifts of Mrs. Charles A. Keeler, September 1944 and June 1946. Purchased from Mrs. Charles A. Keeler, December 1949. Purchased from Mrs. Merodine Keeler McIntyre, April 1950.
