Abstract:
The Mount Everest Expedition Collection houses documents, papers, correspondence, team biographies, finances, photos, radio transcripts, cassette tapes, news articles, and data that pertain to the American Medical Research Expedition to Everest (AMREE). In the fall of 1981, Drs. F. Duane Blume of California State University, Bakersfield, John B. West of the University of California, San Diego, and climbing director John P. Evans of Conifer, Colorado led a group of eighteen climbers and scientists to the summit of Mount Everest to conduct research on cardiac and respiratory function in the human body during a severe lack of oxygen. AMREE was the first expedition to Mount Everest for the purpose of scientific research, and this collection includes the logistical details of its preparation, the transcripts of debriefings by those who reached the summit, as well as the statistical and scientific data that was collected during the course of the expedition.
