Appointed to the position of University Librarian in 1959 by Fred Harcleroad, Floyd R. Erickson received his Bachelor of Education from the State Teachers College in Wisconsin, a Bachelor of Science in Library Science from the University of Minnesota, and his M.A. from Long Beach State College. During his first year as University librarian, he organized the acquisition of 5,700 volumes with a staff of approximately four people. He corresponded closely with many State College libraries, public libraries, and political figures (notably, Congressman George P. Miller) to acquire materials for student and faculty use. Throughout his 21-year tenure as University Librarian, Erickson saw the Library shift from a small office at Sunset High School,to a locker room at the Hayward Union High School building, to a small room in the Science Building, to its current location at the California State University, East Bay Hayward Campus. He also developed a strong connection with Henry Evans, a printer whose artwork has been displayed in the Library for many years. In 1980 he retired and was succeeded by Melissa Rose as the University Librarian and passed away on January 24, 2008.
