The Emile Topp Papers were artificially created but contains document pertaining to his time spent as the Superintendent of Cal Maritime.

Biographical / historical:

Emile Topp was born in New York on April 22, 1893. At the age of 37 he was named the first Superintendent of the California Maritime Academy, previously the California Nautical School, running the school from May 11, 1930 to February 14, 1934. Unlike today, during his tenure the position of Superintendent was synonymous with the title Ships Master. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and passed away on June 23, 1937 in San Francisco and was buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
