Series 1. Hard News: Women in Broadcast Journalism

Scope and Contents

This series consists of 30 audio tapes containing oral history interviews conducted circa 1986 as part of the research for Hard News: Women in Broadcast Journalism , by David H. Hosley and gayle k. yamada (New York: Greenwood Press, 1987). All the interviews, except for Harriet Ann Bishop's, were part of the Hard News project and were about women in broadcast news. Bishop's interview was for Yamada's master's thesis and was about older women as television anchors. The length of the interviews range from 15 minutes to 2 hours, with the average length being 1 hour.

Series 2. Uncommon Courage: Patriotism and Civil Liberties

Scope and Contents

The series consists of audio and video tapes containing oral history interviews conducted in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of the research for Uncommon Courage: Patriotism and Civil Liberties , a documentary produced by gayle k. yamada. The documentary focuses on Japanese American soldiers that served as part of the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) during World War II and the occupation of Japan–all while their families back in America were stripped of their civil rights and sent to isolated internment camps. The length of the interviews range from 1 to 5 hours, with the average length around 2 hours. Additional primary and archival resources used are also included.

Scope and Contents

Oral history interviews conducted with Japanese American veterans and intelligence officers from World War II. Interviews are a mix of audio and video interviews, with some interviewees having sat for more than one session.
