--From the website for the Department of Planning and Development of Santa Clara County, 2022.
The Santa Clara Valley was a major source of fruit production starting in the 1870s. However, since the 1960s, it has undergone significant urbanization, transitioning from fruit production to high technology. This region, encompassing the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, became known as Silicon Valley, for the importance of silicon in the hardware upon which much of the industry is built.

    Scope and Contents

This collection contains of reports and publications from the Santa Clara County Planning Department. It is primarily composed of environmental impact reports (EIRs) dating from the 1970s-1980s, with a smaller amount of published materials on other aspects of demography, land use, zoning, and development. The materials are mostly concerned with the area within Santa Clara County, with additional reports for the larger Santa Clara Valley and other California locations such as Los Angeles. There is one EIR for New Castle County, Delaware. The collection came with a card index which appears to correspond with the EIRs.
The collection also contains a number of aerial views of the county from 1970.
