    2. Trees and forest scenes
    3. Grand features of California scenery
    4. Review of California's progress

    Note

"Atlas" of illustrations accompanies smaller volume of text with collation: [10], 132, iii p., [3] leaves. Added title page in text volume: "Vischer's pictorial of California, landscape, trees and forest scenes, grand features of California scenery, life, traffic, and customs : photographs from the original drawings in five series of twelve numbers each, with a supplement, and contributions from reliable sources : San Francisco, April 1870."
Atlas bound as a guard book, with pages of plates printed on heavy card stock and bound in with linen strips. Plates are mounted on the heavy card stock.
Contains photographic reproductions, chiefly of drawings made by Vischer between 1858 and 1867. "Few copies contain precisely the same number of plates"--Cowan & Cowan.
Variants of both volumes have been noted. Text volume: t.p. printed in black (regular paper) or in red (heavy card stock); "Dedication to the Society of California Pioneers" (p. [i]-iii at end) printed in red or brown; atlas: some copies have on t.p. verso: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1870, by Edward Vischer, in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D.C."
Also published in a "cheaper octavo edition"; see Howes.
Bancroft copy F866.V83 [copy 1]: Text volume in black cloth decorated in gold, title on front cover in gold; atlas (c. 1-2) in dark brown morocco.
Bancroft Library copy F866.V83 c. 1: 199 plates. Includes some photographic reproductions of photographs by Carleton E. Watkins, Thomas Houseworth, Eadweard Muybridge, and others.
Items 1-60 numbered in print on pages. Higher numbers supplied by Bancroft Library, reflecting the order of prints in Bancroft's F866.V83 1870 [copy 1].

    Note

This listing was keyed from an older typescript transcription of Vischer captions, without reference to the originals. Some inconsistency in style (capitalization, punctuation, and supplied notation) is present, and should not be assumed to be an accurate reflection of details found on originals.
The term "photograph" or "photographs" was sometimes supplied to indicate that the images are, or are likely to be, reproductions of photographs rather than photographic reproducitons of drawings. Originals were not checked to verify each likely photographic image.
