The email component of the Digital Files series contains Donna Haraway's saved email correspondence from 1998 to 2024 using her UC Santa Cruz email address. Major correspondents include Katie King, Rusten Hogness, Adele Clarke, Shoshanah Dubiner, Susan Caudill, Linda Weisser, Margaret Wertheim, Adele Clarke, C.A. Sharp, Karen Barad, Sheila Namir, Carla Freccero, Susan Harding, James Clifford, Michale Hadfield, Kim Tallbear, Barbara Epstein, Scott Gilbert, and Anna Tsing.
This subseries includes over 69,000 individual email messages with more than 45,000 attachments, and documents Haraway's scholarly activities including writing and publication processes, collaborative research, speaking engagements, and professional exchanges within the History of Consciousness Department and broader intellectual community. It also contains administrative communication related to her academic role, graduate advising, and departmental affairs. Additionally, it documents a vast range of correspondence related to dog training and animal health, community and activist engagement, personal notes to friends and colleagues, communication with her extended family, and post-retirement projects which span the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Processing information:
-
The email in this collection was processed by Alix Norton and Annika Berry, 2024-2026. Email messages were transferred from Haraway's Apple Mail client in October 2024 and converted to mbox format using Emailchemy. Only messages marked as "Saved Mail" by Haraway were transferred to the archives, and the organization of her messages within subfolders (e.g. Students, Publications, Letters in Progress) was retained.
The Mailbag tool was used to convert mbox files to PDF, creating one PDF file for each email message, with corresponding attachments. The Mailbag conversion also created a csv manifest file for each subfolder showing email correspondents, subject, and attachments.
After converting the email with Mailbag, content was reviewed for sensitive information using TreeSize Pro File Search, DArc, and ePADD Lexicon Search. Emails with sensitive content were removed, including health and medical information, personal identifying information (PII), confidential personnel matters, some UC administration, and financial and computing accounts.
- Arrangement:
-
Haraway's original order of email messages has been retained within the "Saved Mail" folder structure that was transferred from her Apple Mail email client. Each subfolder within Saved Mail contains a folder with a numbered PDF file for each email message (e.g. 1.pdf), an "attachments" folder containing numbered folders that correspond to the email messages (e.g. a folder titled 1 contains attachments to the email message 1.pdf), and a "manifest" .csv file listing each numbered email message in that subfolder. For each email message, the manifest .csv file lists the message number, the date, the sender and recipient(s), and the subject line. Researchers may browse the contents of the email messages by using the .csv file in each subfolder as a directory for those messages. The subfolders of email messages within Haraway's Saved Mail folder are listed below. Some of these folders are further subdivided.
