Audiovisual material, Series I. circa 1960s-1976

Arrangement

Materials have been arranged alphabetically by the archivist. Audiovisual items were assigned consecutive item numbers upon receipt which may differ from any number(s) appearing on the original item or accompanying materials as some original item numbers were duplicative or misleading.

The audiovisual material in Series I. is unavailable until reformatted.

Scope and Contents

Series I. includes 26 reels of Super 8mm film, 7 reels of videotape, 3 videocassettes, and 10 reels of audiotape, comprising films, fragments, interviews, finished works and performance documentation, including footage of some posthumous performance productions and working materials. Some materials are unlabeled or have unknown content, and several have labels in indecipherable handwriting or feature only initials.

At Sunrise a Cry was Heard or The Halved Painting at UC Irvine, 1974 June 5

Physical Description

1 videotape reel (30 min.) ; 1/2 in.

Scope and Contents

The typewritten label on the front of the inner plastic case reads, "At Sunrise a Cry was Heard, or, The Halved Painting, UC Irvine, June 5, '74." A second typewritten label on the spine of the case reads, "Guy de Cointet." The outer paper sleeve has a piece of paper tape along the top edge that has the handwritten number 8 in a circle, followed by the words "Loan to Cont. Museum, return to Brian Dailey" followed by a phone number.

Caneila, circa 1960s

Physical Description

1 film reel (approximately 15 min.) ; super 8 mm.

Scope and Contents

One 5-inch Super 8 film reel in a metal container, on which a piece of tape reads, "Caneila 2 s[_]ie" with the second word indecipherable. A small round orange sticker also on the front of the can was labeled with the number 2.

Caneila, Old Woman, circa 1960s

Physical Description

1 film reel (approximately 15 min.) ; super 8 mm.

Scope and Contents

One 5-inch Super 8 film reel in a metal container, on which a sticky note was taped and in handwritten ink is written, "F-5, 20, 1 of 1, Caneila, old woman." The number 5 appears to be a correction written over the number 4.

Scope and Contents

Videocassette is unlabled, but a loose label sticker is tucked into the clear plastic label holder on the front cover. A piece of tape along the top edge features a number 3 in a circle, followed by the words, "Loaned to Museum, contents unknown, return to Brian Dailey" followed by a phone number.

The outer paper sleeve has a piece of paper tape along the top edge that has the handwritten number 9 in a circle, followed by the words "Loan to L.A. Cont. Museum, return to Brian Dailey," followed by a phone number.

Label reads in type, "Guy de Cointet: 'Going to the Market' (performer: Peg Shirley), 'Lost at Sea' (Performer: Virginia Farmer), Cirrus Gallery, L.A. Jan. 14, '75." The primary label on the hard blue plastic cover reads, "Cirrus, 708 N. Manhattan Pl. Los Angeles, CA 90038, Tel. 213-42-1157, Guy de Cointet, two new works: Going to the Market and Lost at Sea, presentation Tuesday, January 14, at 8:30 PM." A sticky note attached to the cover repeats the title and date information, and a piece of tape along the top edge features a number 1 in a circle, followed by the words, "Loaned to Con. Museum, return to Brian Dailey" followed by a phone number.

The typewritten label on the front of the inner plastic case reads, "Going to the market, Lost at Sea, Cirrus Gallery - January 14, '75." The outer paper sleeve has a piece of paper tape along the top edge that has the number 7 in a circle, followed by the handwritten words "Loan to Con. Museum, return to Brian Dailey" followed by a phone number. A sticky note attached to the paper sleeve repeats the titles, location, and date of the performance, along with the characters, "F-7, 1210 ft." An additional piece of transparent tape is labeled "2 of 6" in ink.

The original box is labeled "1 of 9" in ink on the front, and the "#5" is handwritten in ink on the back, with multiple other manufacturer numbers also present on the box. The words "Michael S." are handwritten on the side of the box in marker.

An original sticker with the type printed characters "C 20672" is also present. Additionally, the characters "#4" are handwritten in ink on the reel itself.

Also present are the characters "So #723" handwritten on tape; a sticky note with the characters "F-27" and "#0673" handwritten in ink; and the words "Print AFI" and the number "322" written in ink directly on the reel.

One 3-inch Super 8 film reel in an original Kodak processing box with shipping label attached, addressed to M. F. Weissberg in Washington, D. C. A printed label reads, "Weissberg 1962," and handwritten notes in ink read, "Wash, Nina & P.R., Dec. 1962, Poor." The shipping stamp on the box is dated June 9, 1963.

Scope and Contents

Handwritten in black ink on the original box for the reel R10 are the words, "Guy de Cointet, #1 copy," along with "Nov. '76" and the title An Interview with Dr. Hun in red ink, which is followed by the characters "(6')." A sticky note repeats the title and date, along with the characters "F-17." An piece of transparent tape features the characters, "1 of 1."

Scope and Contents

A piece of tape on the R2 reel reads, "Essai Montage" handwritten in ink, followed by another word that could be "réalisation" but is unclear. A sticky note attached to the reel reads, "F2, 20, Montage," in ink, followed by the characters "1 of 3" written in black marker.

Scope and Contents

The handwritten label on the original box for R7 reads, "T.V. Sound," in red ink, at the bottom of a list of crossed out titles written in black ink. The other words are "Movie complete soundtrack, Nymi's (?) T.V. sound, Little Blower 2V." A sticky note repeats the title T.V. Sound with "F-12 900 ft." added in handwritten ink.
 

Storyboards, Series II. circa 1969-1971

Scope and Contents

Series II. includes 51 storyboards on 3 5/8 x 5 7/8 inch cards, outlining the story for the film I Dream (Old Woman), featuring numbered images outlined in black marker with highlights in colored marker, and descriptions handwritten in pencil on the verso. Scenes feature an older person relaxing in a porch chair and performing domestic activities outside her home, such as beating a rug on a railing.
