Background

Biographical / historical:

Brigham Alicen Arnold was born November 4, 1917 in the state of Michigan to Harold Alicen Arnold and Virginia "Jennie" Peterson. During the Great Depression, his family moved between Sharon, Wisconsin and Tucson, Arizona. After graduating from Tucson High School in 1935, Brigham balanced studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona and working his family's farmland in Wisconsin. By 1939, he changed his major to Anthropology and attended Archaeological Field School from 1940-1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, which sent him to Oregon State University to complete his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. The military shipped Brigham off in 1944, where he traveled to Casablanca, Rome and Trieste, Italy.

After World War II, Brigham traveled to Latin America, visiting Copper Canyon, Chichen Itza, and Tegucigalpa. This rekindled his interest in his studies and, by 1947, he began graduate work at UC Berkeley. On January 2, 1950, he married Lila Rose. Shortly thereafter, he began Field Research in Latin America (1950-1954) where he worked with geographer, Carl Sauer. After he attained his PhD in Geography, he was hired in 1954 at Sacramento State and became head of the Department of Geography. In addition, he taught courses in Anthropology, Archaeology, Climatology and Geomorphology. He retired in 1988.

Brigham passed away September 26, 2010.
