Biography
Elizabeth Butler Gainer 1843-1921 was born in Warren County, IL. in Larchmont and lived her early life between Larchmont &
Monmouth before traveling overland with her family to Oregon.
She resided in Long Beach, CA for 15 years. Mrs. Gainer was married to Joseph F. Gainer, was mother to Mrs. H. L. Pillsbury
[Ann Gainer], Eleanor Gainer, Marie Gainer and Frank B. Gainer as well as grandmother to Sterling Pillsbury and Elizabeth
Pillsbury. Mrs. Gainer was also the niece of Rev. Harrison Jones, a pioneer preacher in Ohio and chaplain of the regiment
commanded
by President James A. Garfield during the Civil War.
Mrs. Gainer was known as a most loveable Christian character, ever prominent in church work teaching the Loyal Women's Sunday
School class in the First Christian Church. She was also a member of the Gaviota Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution.
Scope and Content of Collection
Papers documenting the history and geneology of the families Butler, Jones, Morgan, and Thomas from seventeenth-century Wales
and England to the United
States. Includes a holograph reminiscence (127 p.), typescript transcriptions of the manuscript, photographs, correspondence,
documents, scrapbook and three small framed items.
