Scope and content:

Public relations files and materials relating to tobacco control from Andy Weisser, former VP of Communications with the American Lung Association in California.

Public relations and advertising files, and A/V materials encompassing the efforts of the American Lung Association(ALA) to combat tobacco smoking and other types of harmful air pollution. Mostly pertaining to the Los Angeles area, these materials range roughly 1993-2009. Topics include air pollution and health, diesel and cleaner transportation.

Biographical / historical:

Andy Weisser was the Vice President of communications at the American Lung Association from 1994 to 2009. He was responsible for communications and advocacy activities in the Los Angeles County, including work on local efforts to support California's smokefree workplace law and more stringent health-based EPA air quality standards. Andy Weisser generated award-winning campaigns addressing the FDA Rule to reduce youth access to tobacco and marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. He recieved his Bachelor's degree in Journalism from California State University, Northridge with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in business management.

The American Lung Association (ALA) was founded in 1904 as the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tubercolosis (NASPT). In 1918, the association's name is changed to the National Tubercolosis Association (NTA). Lung research funding begins in the 1920s. In 1960, cigarette smoking is stated as a cause of lung cancer and other lung diseases, advocacy efforts against tobacco smoking commence. The NTA changes its name to the American Lung Association (ALA) in 1973. The ALA's advocacy efforts assist in the adoption of the Clean Air Ammendments of 1990, laws eliminating smoking in public spaces and other tobacco control initiatives.

This collection was donated to the UCSF Archives and Special Collections by Andy Weisser in 2022. Additional materials added in 2024.

Restrictions:
