    Biographical / Historical

    The Railroading Merit Badge was first established in 1952 and has been earned by more than 189,000 scouts. Scouting has a long history of encouraging the scouts to learn about railroads, railroad history and railroading as well as learning about the hobby of model railroading. Scouts used these educational kits, produced by the Association of America Railroads and additional information provided by the Boy Scouts of America to earn their Railroad Merit badge. To earn the Railroading merit badge, Scouts must demonstrate a general knowledge of the railroad industry, train engineering and design, and an understanding of railway safety precautions.

    Scope and Contents

    This file contains materials relating to the achievement of the Boy Scout Railroading Merit badge. The 5th edition of the Teacher's Kit: Railroad Transportation" was produced by the Association of American Railroads. This kit was utilized by Cub Scout troops in 1951 to promote Railroading month (April of 1951) to the Catalina Council Area Cubbers. Cub Scouting is part of the Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
    Also included is correspondence from the Catalina Council of the Boy Scouts of With the use of the kit and additional ideas provided to the "Cubbie" in the letter, the scout could enhance their fun and adventures while learning about the railroads.
