    Biographical / Historical

    Dale L. Morgan (1914-1971), Western historian, was born in Salt Lake City and educated at the University of Utah. He was state superintendent for the Utah Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration from 1940 until 1942 and information specialist with the Office of Price Administration during World War II. As a Guggenheim Fellow for the 1947-1948 year, Morgan did research on the subject of Mormonism throughout the United States. Morgan wrote books on many Western subjects, including Mormonism and Jedediah Smith.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection consists of typewritten transcripts of newspaper articles written by others and compiled by Dale L. Morgan for his research on the Mormons and the Far West. The articles also cover related Western subjects such as the opening, exploration, and settlement of the West; the fur trade; Indians of the middle and southwestern states; the Santa Fe trade; and the California Gold Rush.
