    Administrative History:

Called to the ministry in 1921 while listening to Holland Oates preach at the Pacific Garden Mission, Rice enrolled at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and then served as a pastor until 1926 when he went into full-time evangelism work. During the 1930’s he became an Independent Baptist and continued as an evangelist, leading many large city-wide crusades in the years after World War II. In 1934, Rice founded The Sword of the Lord, a bi-weekly publication that grew into an influential fundamentalist Baptist newspaper. In this publication he fought his battles against both the New Evangelicals as well as the separationist Fundamentalists.
