Biography/Administrative History

Operated on 90 acres of land, the Claremont Cooperative Water Company provided irrigation for stockholders within a 2.75-mile radius. Water was not sold directly, and stockholders purchased delivery at a price of $0.0125 per hour-inch. The CCWC operated in competition with dozens of irrigation enterprises in the Pomona Valley, many of which were more successful.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection offers a comprehensive catalog of the financial and legal history of the Claremont Cooperative Water Company. It offers hundreds of stock purchase and reissue receipts, which was the only way that water was obtained. Invoices with many major banks and utility corporations provide insight into how the CCWC role in the economy of Claremont. The collection also offers legal materials recorded by the CCWC with many individual markings as an archive of how the company was structured and managed. Hundreds of Claremont residents are mentioned in meeting notices and sale certificates. While the collection offers letters and general correspondence, it does not offer precise biographies of the families and laborers who worked and operated the company. It is also limited in scope with regard to administrative materials and some advertising materials are not dated.
