The Galloway-Stone expedition was formed in 1909 by financier Julius F. Stone for the
purpose of running the rapids of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon for pure sport.
The party consisted of Stone; Raymond Cogswell, photographer; C.C. Sharp; Seymour S.
Dubendorff; and leader of the party, Nathaniel Galloway. The group traveled down the
Colorado River from the Green River in Utah to Needles, Arizona in 5 weeks, encountering
only minor problems. The party gained notoriety for being the first to successfully navigate
the difficult route for sport.
This collection contains a photograph album of 103 prints, 32 loose copy prints, and film
negative copies of addtional photographs of the Galloway-Stone river expedition through the
Grand Canyon in 1909. The photographs were almost all taken by Raymond Cogswell, expedition
photographer and include detailed captions. The album's first page has a dedication to
Seymour S. Dubendorff written by Julius F. Stone, and two portraits of him. The remaining
images are from the river trip, with many of Dubendorff. An undated clipping at the back of
the album says that Stone presented the album to Mrs. C. W. Dubendorff sometime after
Seymour S. Dubendorff died from illness in 1912. The additional loose prints and film
negatives are copies of a larger album of 555 images of the Galloway-Stone expedition that
is in the collection of Grand Canyon National Park. The Huntington Library borrowed the
album and made the copies in 1963. Correspondence from the 1960s between the Huntington
Library, Otis Marston and officials of Grand Canyon National Park is also part of this
collection.
