Biographical / Historical
The
Central
America
Research Institute (CARIN) was established by scholars as an independent entity in Berkeley, California (not associated with
UC Berkeley), in 1981 during the Central American crisis. Members of the organization gathered both serial publications and
archival materials from Central American countries. Around 1990, CARIN was closed and part of its collection donated to the
University of Southern California.

This collection contains subject files and publications related to the Central American crisis from the 1970s through the
1980s that were collected for the
Central
America
Research Institute (CARIN), an independent organization in Berkeley, CA, which existed from the 1970s until 1990. There are
materials on countries including El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and on U.S. policy towards the region. Materials
are arranged into two groups: subject files (Boxes 1-42) and publications (Boxes 43-258). The subject files contain printed
documents including reports, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, etc., on various topics. The publications are organized broadly
in alphabetical order and include a wide variety of titles.
