This collection contains subject files and publications related to the Central American crisis from the 1970s through the 1980s that were collected for the Central America Research Institute (CARIN), an independent organization in Berkeley, CA. There are materials on countries including El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and on U.S. policy towards the region.
The Central America Research Institute (CARIN) was established by scholars as an independent entity in Berkeley, California (not associated with UC Berkeley), in 1981 during the Central American crisis. Members of the organization gathered both serial publications and archival materials from Central American countries. Around 1990, CARIN was closed and part of its collection donated to the University of Southern California.
