This collection contains subject files and publications related to the Central American crisis from the 1970s through the 1980s that were collected for the Central America Research Institute (CARIN), an independent organization in Berkeley, CA, which existed from the 1970s until 1990. The Central America Research Institute (CARIN) was established by scholars as an independent entity in Berkeley, California (not associated with UC Berkeley), in 1981 during the Central American crisis. Members of the organization gathered both serial publications and archival materials from Central American countries. Following CARIN's closure around 1990, the organization donated parts of its records to the University of Southern California.
