Abstract: The Paul Dayhoff (1925- ) Collection documents Church of the Nazarene missions in southern Africa in the 20th century. Bulk
dates range from 1952-2006. It contains data on 475 persons, mostly African nationals, who have been crucial to the development
of the church in Africa. A version of this information was published in the internet Dictionary of African Biography (www.dacb.org).
Other information was also published in Living Stones in Africa (3 volumes, 1996-2006) and in Africa Nazarene Mosaic: Inspiring
Accounts of Living Faith (2001).

Biography/Administrative History
Paul S. Dayhoff grew up in South Africa, born to missionary parents Fannie and Irvine E. Dayhoff. He received his B.A. from
the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (1948) and a B.D. from Asbury Theological Seminary, Kentucky (1951). He earned
his D.Th. from University of South Africa in 1980. His D.Th. dissertation was entitled: “The Message of Holiness of the Church
of the Nazarene among the Northern Sotho People.”
After his studies in the United States, Dayhoff returned as a missionary of the Nazarene Church to South Africa. He taught
and held administrative posts in Nazarene schools and Theological Colleges in South Africa and Swaziland. Dayhoff was a founding
faculty member of the Nazarene Theological College, South Africa. After Dayhoff retired, he returned to the United States.
Dayhoff published three books documenting the life stories of local African men and women who were involved in the mission
and ministry of the Nazarene Church in Africa.

Scope and Content of Collection
The Paul Dayhoff (1925- ) Collection documents Church of the Nazarene missions in southern Africa in the 20th century. Bulk
dates range from 1952-2006.
Material includes Paul Dayhoff’s three published works and related notes; Africa Church of the Nazarene Annual Assembly reports;
individual Church papers, and periodicals published by the Nazarene Church. Photograph subjects include the African Nazarenes
documented in Dayhoff’s biographical works. Compact discs contain pictures of the fauna and flora of Africa, Nazarene ministry
in Africa, and the Dayhoffs’ family history. The audio cassettes contain interviews conducted for the books’ publications.
