    Biographical / Historical

In 1967, the San Diego College for Men, also known as the University of San Diego or San Diego University, and the San Diego College for Women established a reciprocal agreement to allow co-ed course enrollment at both colleges. The reciprocal agreement was the beginning of negotiations to merge the two schools, along with the School of Law, into one institution called the "new" University of San Diego. Over a five year period, the two institutions consolidated their separate academic departments, administrative functions, and boards of trustees into one university. In 1971, Author Hughes became the first layperson to be hired as university president for the "new" University of San Diego. The merger was finalized in the spring of 1972 with the first, merged alumni association meeting taking place in 1973.
