    Abstract: The collection consists of a prospectus on potential economic investment opportunities in Panama prepared in the 1920s by Frank A. Elliott, a California mining engineer who helped California-based companies expand into Latin-American markets. The prospectus provides an overview of Panamanian economics and trade, along with specific recommendations for investment opportunities in sugar and alcohol production in the country. Also included in the document are a number of black and white photographs, including depictions of the sugarcane harvest and fields, mills and other facilities, roadways, and streets in various Panamanian towns.

    Biographical Note

    Frank A. Elliott (1865-1940), was a California mining engineer whose family owned tropical plant farms in the Sacramento Delta, and was aiding California-based companies expand into potentially lucrative Latin American markets.

    Collection Scope and Contents

    The collection consists of a 76 page typescript prospectus written by Frank Elliott, which provides an overview of potential investment opportunities in Panama in the late 1920s. Included in the prospectus is information on Panamanian economic development, international trade regulations, and information on local sugar and alcohol industries including areas for investment and growth in these sectors. The prospectus also includes 66 silver gelatin photographs documenting the sugarcane harvesting and milling process, port and dock facilities, roadways including the new National Highway, and various street scenes in Panama and the Canal Zone.
