    Biographical Information

    Hulda Evelyn Thelander was born and raised in Little Falls, MN January 11, 1896, the daughter of John A. and Ida (Olson) Thelander. She received a B.A. (1922), and an M.A. from the University of Minnesota (1923), and an M.D. cum laude (1925) from the same institution. She did her internship at Children's Hospital in San Francisco, where she was to become chief of the department of pediatrics in 1951. During WWII she was a Lt. Commander in the Navy, retiring as Commander and serving at chief consultant for women veterans, Western Area. Dr. Thelander was also a consultant to the California State Department of Public Health, a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and member of the American Board of Pediatrics (1934), of the Pediatric Society, the AMA, the Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Thelander founded the Child Development Center at Children's Hospital (1952) and conducted studies on brain-damaged children and general pediatric neurology. In 1971 she received a special citation from the Gold Headed Cane Society for having completed medical school a second time, at UCSF.

    The papers consist in large part of correspondence (much with friends and family members), diaries, memoirs, travel accounts, some medical manuscripts and research notes. Materials relating to family members are restricted.

    Arrangement

    The collection has been subdivided into five series: I. Personalia; II. Correspondence; III. Travel Notes and Diaries; IV. Manuscritps; V. Miscellaneous.
