    Biographical / Historical

The first Annual Pig Bowl was held on the Saturday of January 11, 1975, at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, California. The idea of the Pig Bowl came when a member of the Sacramento Police Department and another member of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department were reminiscing about playing football at Sacramento State College. Initially, the idea was to have a flag football game between the two departments. However, in 1974, the idea was brought up by a committee to have a first-class football game at Hughes Stadium and use the funds raised from the event to support local charities, including the Police Athletic League, the County Sheriff's Widows and Orphans Fund, and the Sacramento Association for the Retarded. The "Pig" in Pig Bowl stood for Pride, Integrity, and Guts. From 1975 onward, the event is a yearly tradition and, as of 2021, is currently known as "Guns & Hoses".
