Biographical / historical:

Mauricio Aviles, originally from El Salvador, has been producing community events in San Francisco for over forty years. As a longtime resident of the Mission district, he was involved with the social and cultural life of the neighborhood, and produced the first dance event in association with Carnaval SF in 1981. In 1982, Mauricio took on the role of Media Coordinator of Carnaval SF, and continued to produce entertainment events in 1982-1983.

In 2012, Mauricio, photographer Lou Dematteis and artist Daniel Galvez, created the Carnaval Mural Restoration Project to raise funds and restore the iconic Carnaval mural originally painted in 1982 on a building above The House of Brakes, on 24th Street corner of South Van Ness. Designed by Galvez and painted with a team of artists in 1982, the mural used images from the community and featured Carnaval photographs by Dematteis, a photo journalist and documentary photographer who was one to the original founders of the Carnaval Committee in 1979.

After two years of fundraising, Galvez restored the mural with three of the four original artists, Jamie Morgan, Dan Fontes and Jan Shield, who were joined by Keith Sklar. Supervisor David Campos and many others contributed to the restoration. The mural restoration project was supported by Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, Recology and the Mission Housing Development Corporation, who served as fiscal sponsor in conjunction with the SF Community Challenge Grant Program. A celebration was held at the mural site on December 14, 2014.
