    Scope and Contents

These are letters and receipts of Capt. Ignacio Martinez. The letter is handwritten in ink, entirely in Spanish and dated 3 Marzo, 1832, and signed Ignacio Martinez. The letter appears to be discussing the Pueblo de San Jose and several problematic money issues that are being experienced by the citizens. It is signed by Ignacio Martinez. The file also contains a large receipt of many business transactions recorded from San Jose on 1835. The receipt lists payments, the date and the amouont of the payment, and has Martinez's name at the top, with the phrase "Frigate Rosa". The lower part of the receipt appears to be from San Francisco, Oct. 1835. The items vary from food, wine to cordobanci (or tanned goat hides). The second receipt, dated Julio 21, de 1840, is received from Senor Don Ignacio Martinies, and is signed by "Guillermo H. Davis". It also includes the name "Nathan Spear", and appears to be products from cattle produced by the pueblo or mission. The 3rd receipt is very faded, the date of Junio can be read at the top, and Juni at the bottom, but no year. "Don Ignacio Martinez" is written along the top of the receipt.
