The Linda Mae Mahon Lema Foundation was created to honor lifelong Elk Grove resident Linda Mae Mahon Lema (1947-2015) and her love for, and commitment to, the promotion of family and local history within her hometown. This ethic has been manifested through the Lema Foundation's aggressive collection of primary content relating to the Elk Grove area's rich and diverse history. As stated in in its mission statement, "research, document, record and preserve, present and publish the personal stories and family histories of the greater area of Elk Grove." More information on the Lema Foundation can be found at www.lmmlfoundation.org.
Located in southern Sacramento County, Elk Grove rests on the ancestral lands of the Plains Miwok. Post-European contact Elk Grove was first established in 1850 as a stagecoach stop. Incorporated in 2000, Elk Grove has been a center of agricultural activity for centuries. A strong tradition of wine, hops, grape, cattle, dairy, pear, and poultry production was enhanced by Elk Grove's close proximity to the north-south right away of the Southern Pacific Railroad which enabled stable access to markets in Sacramento, Stockton, the Bay Area and beyond. Over the last half-century, much of the area's traditional agricultural lands have given way to hyper-urbanization while a combination of both residential and commercial build up has made Elk Grove one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and second largest in Sacramento County next to Sacramento proper.
